Botox & Dermal Fillers

Botox and Dermal Fillers

Look and feel better today.

There are two main differences between Botox and dermal fillers. Botox freezes the muscles to prevent wrinkles and lines caused by facial expressions from forming. Dermal fillers, on the other hand, use hyaluronic acid or other similar substances to plump up the areas that have lost their smoothness due to natural aging.

What Is Botox?

Dentists use Botox to treat various dental issues, primarily to relax overactive jaw muscles to relieve pain. It can also be used for cosmetic purposes, and can assist patients adjusting to dentures.

The effects are temporary and typically last for several months. It is considered a minimally invasive alternative to other treatments like mouth guards or surgery.

Therapeutic uses

  • Teeth grinding: Botox can relax the jaw muscles, reducing the force and frequency of teeth grinding and clenching, which helps prevent tooth damage, jaw pain, and headaches.
  • TMJ disorders: By relaxing the muscles around the jaw, Botox alleviates pain, discomfort, and tension associated with temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders.
  • Facial pain: It can be used to help manage other facial pain conditions, such as chronic migraines or trigeminal neuralgia, by blocking the release of pain-causing chemicals.
  • Muscle spasms: Botox can provide relief by temporarily paralyzing muscles that cause spasms in the face and mouth.
  • Denture adaptation: For patients who have been without teeth for a while, Botox can help retrain and relax hyperactive muscles to make it easier to adapt to wearing dentures.

Cosmetic uses

  • Gummy smile: Injections can be used to correct a gummy smile by relaxing the muscles that cause the upper lip to lift too high when smiling.
  • Facial wrinkles: Botox can smooth out fine lines and wrinkles around the mouth, providing a more youthful appearance and complementing other dental work like veneers.

What are Dermal Fillers?

Dermal fillers offer several benefits, including smoothing wrinkles and fine lines, restoring lost volume to areas like the cheeks and lips, and improving facial symmetry. They can also correct acne scars, plump thin lips, and create a more hydrated and youthful appearance. Many people appreciate that results are often noticeable immediately and have minimal recovery time.

  • Reduce wrinkles and lines: Fillers can smooth out forehead creases, frown lines, laugh lines, and lines around the mouth and nose.
  • Restore volume: They add fullness to areas that may have lost volume due to age, such as the cheeks, temples, and lips.
  • Plump lips: Fillers can be used to create fuller, more defined lips.
  • Correct scars: They can make indented acne scars and other types of scars less noticeable by filling in the depressions.
  • Improve facial symmetry: Fillers can be used to balance out features that may be asymmetrical.
  • Hydrate the skin: Fillers made with hyaluronic acid attract and retain moisture, which can lead to more hydrated and dewy-looking skin.
  • Improve skin texture: Some fillers can improve overall skin texture and may even stimulate collagen production over time.
